vpsAdmin 1.0 – stable

vpsAdmin is an opensource (GPLv3) web application for managing OpenVZ based servers written in PHP+MySQL+BASH. Finally, we’ve managed to release its first stable version – vpsAdmin 1.0. More information about vpsAdmin can be found in my previous post.

Almost a year ago, my friend – snajpa came up with an idea of creating non-profitable organization (vpsFree.cz), which would be offering virtual servers for its members for low price. The main idea was to provide VPS for everybody, so even students could have their own server. By that time, snajpa started working on a web based application for managing members and VPSs.

What is vpsAdmin? vpsAdmin is an opensource (GPLv3) web application for managing OpenVZ based servers written in PHP+MySQL+BASH. The application supports multiple hardware nodes, which means that you can manage all VPS from every node at one place. This is done by distributing all necessary information by MySQL replication.

vpsAdmin provides GUI for features such as managing VPS (add/remove/edit), setting up VPS limits (CPU, RAM HDD), creating firewall rules for iptables – each VPS can have its own firewall settings, advanced networking (both IPv4 and IPv6 support) and many others. I will write more about all major features, when stable version is released.

We are planning to release stable version 1.0.0 on October 1, 2009. This version will provide:

Complete VPS and customers management
Ability to change UB limits
Networking – IP address management (both IPv4 and IPv6 support), firewall
Multiple server support through circular MySQL replication
Separate executive (privileged) and web-GUI (unprivileged) parts to provide more security; provides transactions log – ajax based GUI written in mootools framework
Multilingual support via gettext (English, French, Dutch, Czech, Hungarian and Slovak language translations are planned to be included in 1.0.0-stable)

I know that there are relatively many web applications for managing VPS running on OpenVZ, but non of them has satisfied our needs. Currently, there is no open-source application written in (almost) pure PHP+MySQL, that’s why we have decided to write our own and release it under GNU GPLv3 .

Create GUI option to load data and/or structure from master to slave server – API has been already created.
Move all strings into english localization file.
Improve documentation.

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS LAST WEEK

Improved Zahraa’s project, so it can connect to remote machine + some small improvements
Merged Zahraa’s branch with my branch
Created function for syncing servers – currently, it automatically creates databases on slave, loads structure&data, once synchronization is called.

Create option to load data and/or structure from master to slave server – This is big and my last task from deliverables, therefore I’m taking one whole week to work on it. I hope, I can finish the task before suggested pens down deadline.

Err, I was very “lucky” on Wednesday morning while I was setting up my SVN branch, I somehow over-wrote my last week’s version with version from midterm… So from yesterday’s morning until today I was working on the work that had been already done. I hope I will get back on track by Sunday.

Fix all possible notices in 3.2.1rc2
Create function PMA_replication_slave_load_data
Create GUI for loading data from master – options to load data/structure or both
Create filter for slave to choose which databases and/or tables are going to be accepted on slave server

Created my own branch on phpMyAdmin’s SVN, thank you Marc for allowing me to do that and for help
Added advanced slave options to start/stop separately IO or SQL thread – PMA_replication_slave_control function created
Added option to reset slave.
Added skip current error option / jump to position in relay log
Fixed all notices in current trunk version (I need to check 3.2.1rc2)

Create GUI for configuring slave (1. configure slave user, 2. load data from master, 3. start/stop slave, 4. check slave status)
Create non-JavaScript GUI (both master and slave)

Make GUI improvements to add master replication and optimized code – mootools_common.js added – the file contains general javascript functions written in mootools framework
Fixed Server Status
Updated functions PMA_DBI_connect in both mysql.di.lib.php and mysqli.dbi.lib.php, so they can connect to a remote server. This was done by adding an extra parameter $server, which is an array of values (host, port and/or socket).
API created (PMA_replication_slave_stop, PMA_replication_slave_start, PMA_replication_slave_bin_log_master,
PMA_replication_slave_change_master)

Fix bug with Webkit based browsers (something is blocking AJAX call inside phpMyAdmin) – not really fixed (because it does not work properly), but this is due to mootools bug, which will be fixed in next release
Submit final patch for upload progress bar (#2798592), to be honest, the patch was finished & submited today.
Add information about table replication (if available) into db_structure.php

Last week, I was working on replication.lib.php in libraries/. replication.lib.php contains all useful functions and variables for checking and managing replication. Therefore, I had to rewrite Server Status section. Also, I updated all of my code according to PMA coding standards.

Fixed problems with IE7,8 in upload progress bar
Updated my code according to phpMyAdmin coding style
Updated code in the “Server Status” section – some code was moved into ./libraries/server_common.inc.php so I can reuse it
“Databases Status” section shows, which databases are used in replication (both master and slave), I will add screenshot tomorrow (my dev. machine is down at the moment)

Try to think about other way of fixing bug #2107746 as the ideas did not work out. Discuss possible options.
